Two Movie Nights – 2/3 and 2/9

Sorry … Doing our best but we cannot control when Belgian movies come our way and unfortunately they don’t last long on our screens.  So we have to jump in as they come!  Two great movies have just surfaced:

‘Two Days, One Night’ – for the first time, Belgian directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne team up with a major international star, Marion Cotillard, to create a universal story about working-class people living on the edges of society. Sandra (Cotillard) has just returned to work after recovering from a serious bout with depression. Realizing that the company can operate with one fewer employee, management tells Sandra she is to be let go. After learning that her co-workers will vote to decide her fate on Monday morning, Sandra races against time over the course of the weekend, often with the help of her husband, to convince each of her fellow employees to sacrifice their much-needed bonuses so she can keep her job. With each encounter, Sandra is brought into a different world with unexpected results in this powerful statement on community solidarity.

The Loft – an ingenious, stylishly filmed thriller about five men who find a dead girl in their secret loft – is directed by one of the most famous Belgian film directors: Erik Van Looy. It is a remake of the most successful Belgian film of all time, Loft, released in 2008 by the same Erik Van Looy.  Other Belgian talents include writer Bart De Pauw (Zelzate), script supervisor Ann Van Aken, director of photography Nicolas Karakatsanis (Antwerp), producer Hilde De Laere and actor Matthias Schoenaerts reprising his role from the original film as bad boy Philip.  And to complete the Belgian input, all interior scenes have been shot at the Videohouse studios in Vilvoorde.

Mark your calendar for those two must-see movies:

  1. Two Days, One Night (PG13) from the Dardenne brothers on Tuesday 3 February at  7.05 pm @ Midtown Art Cinema | 931 Monroe Drive, in the Midtown Promenade Center, Atlanta, GA, 30308.  To purchase your tickets, click here and wiggle your way through the correct movie night.
  2. The Loft (R) on Monday 9 February at [time TBD closer to the date – come back next week] @ AMC Parkway Pointe 15 | 3101 Cobb Pkwy SE Ste 201, Atlanta, GA 30339.  Purchase tickets.

beATL will wait for you inside the theater, or as far as you can go, close to the projection room.  It is always a good idea to purchase your tickets in advance.

After the movie, we usually have a bite and/or a drink close by.

The Loft – 2/9/2015

Let’s go to the movie – again!

The story:  five married men share a secret: a spacious loft, in which they can quietly receive and entertain their lovers and latest conquests. It’s a great deal until, one winter morning, they discover the body of a young woman. No one knows who she is or how she got there. When the five try to find out what happened and why, they soon begin to suspect one another. It also becomes clear that they know far less about each other than they initially thought.

Belgian potluck – 1/31/2015

Our very first event of 2015 looks really promising, since I don’t know any Belgian who doesn’t like to gather around a table with a pintje in his/her hand … So get ready to dig into grand-mama’s cookbook for the one good old family recipe, that will make us all salivate!  There is no better place than our Belgian – homemade (I do insist on that) – Potluck to show off your culinary talents!  However, if the mere thought of mixing ingredients together to produce something edible, stresses you out; then there are other ‘jobs’ available for you… No excuse! Please consult the sign-up sheet.  We want to see all of you!

beATLes Gitte and Rik will welcome you and your family on Saturday January 31st from 5.30 pm in their home in Marietta.

Some tips:

  • although the term “potluck” suggests a random assortment of dishes, the idea is to focus on Belgian (style) food
  • make as much of the dish in advance as you can
  • bring your dish in a to-go container
  • bring a serving dish and serving utensils
  • label your dish(es) if they cannot be traced back to you
  • all those who are gluten intolerant, food allergenic, vegans or have any kind dietary challenge(s) are requested to bring their own food to avoid any mishaps
  • bring something for your kids if you think they would firmly be convinced that our potluck is nothing for them.

Belgian THIRSTday – 1/8/2015

The Pub Perimeter Welcoming Crew

Let’s start 2015 with some British hospitality with an American flair for our first Belgian THIRSTday of the year. Our January gathering will take place this Thursday at The Pub Perimeter.   The bar is absolutely gorgeous, will all the bling-bling a traditional pub has to offer (except the typical smell) and friendliest staff I have ever encountered. They have a good selection of beers including the minimum beATL requirement of 8 Belgian ones.  And tease your palate with some brilliant food … Well it’s not Belgian….  Please take the time to RSVP

The Pub is a small chain based in Cincinnati (this is their twelfth store, and first Georgia location) that has the design of a traditional English pub, with appropriate posters and prints on the walls to give you the full British immersion experience. Henry VIII and the London Underground, The Beatles, The Who, Muse, Radiohead…  And the servers are in kilts (with underwear).   While there, have a quick peak in the upstairs lounge to check on their famous Pour Your Own Beer Wall!

See you on Thursday!  Cheers!
