beATL goes to the movie – Fanny’s Journey | 2/5/2017

A French-Belgian co-production largely shot in Belgium. With Belgian actor Stéphane DE GROODT as Jean, who said about his role in the movie: ‘This is the first time I’ve done a period film and the more I continue in this business, the more I want to erase our friend Stéphane de Groodt, who I know well, in favor of characters who are damaged, tortured, hidden and complex.‘ Bruno MULLENAERTS is police chief… and we have a brochette of Belgian kids: Igor VAN DESSEL student at Lycee Martin V in Louvain-La-Neuve as Maurice, Lou LAMBRECHT as Rachel and Fantine HARDUIN, as Erika, from Mouscron…

About the Film – Based on Fanny Ben-Ami’s autobiographical novel, Fanny’s Journey is an incredible tale of bravery, strength and survival, a story of a daring young girl who will stop at nothing and fear no one. In 1943, 13-year old Fanny and her younger sisters were sent from their home in France to an Italian foster home for Jewish children. When the Nazis arrive in Italy, their caretakers desperately organize the departure of the children to Switzerland. When they are suddenly left on their own, these 11 children do the impossible and reach the Swiss border to freedom.

Dilemma… the movie Elle is coming to Atlanta… Isabelle Huppert is French, Paul Verhoeven is Dutch… and Belgium is squeezed in between… it is close enough to be a good enough excuse for a movie night. Join us on Tuesday 1/17 for the 7 pm screening.

The combo Huppert-Verhoeven can only result in a explosive and controversial topic.  Not for sensitive souls…

More info.

After the movie, some may go to the nearby cafes/restaurants to grab a bite or a drink…

Annual Belgian Potluck – 1/28/2017

No doubt that this tradition is a huge success.  Join us for our 3rd edition on January 28th, 2017.   Our kind hosts Gitte & Rik will open their doors to their lovely home in Marietta at 6 pm.

Put your dearself in your culinary gear and prepare some tasty homemade dish(es) – preferably with a Belgian taste – to share.  We always have peers stressing about cooking so, don’t use it as an excuse: there are other ‘jobs’ available for you… We will have a sign-up sheet and each participating family must bring something to the table!

This year’s potluck will be a kids-free evening, with just adults.  For obvious safety reasons.

Don’t wait to RSVP since attendance is limited and don’t forget every single family must sign up to bring some Belgian homemade [we insist on that] culinary elements to the table!

Details of the evening will be emailed to all registred beATL-members. If you didn’t get your invitation, contact your beATL Queen Patricia at 678-386-3896.

Logistics

  • When: Saturday January 28th, 2017 at 6 pm (no late arrivals please … we can’t start without your food)
  • Where: address will be privately shared in due time to those who RSVP-ed positively
  • Parking: since this is in a private neighborhood, park on the same side of the street, opposite to the house, without blocking any driveways or fire hydrants.  Car pool if possible.
  • RSVP is a must.
  • Sign up sheet is a must.
  • NO CHILDREN, no exception

Some important tips:

  • although the term “potluck” suggests a random assortment of dishes, the idea is to focus on Belgian (style) food
  • bring your dish ready-to-eat in a to-go container
  • bring a serving dish and serving utensils
  • label your dish(es) if they cannot be traced back to you
  • all those who are gluten intolerant, food allergenic, vegans or have any kind dietary challenge(s) are requested to bring their own food to avoid any mishaps.
