Fancy a trip to Greenville, SC?  Why not tackle along the Kortrijk Sister City Delegation in Greenville, SC from May 9th – 13th?

The main purpose of the ‘K2G’ delegation visit is for both cities to learn more about -and be inspired by- each other’s people, ambitions, approach and accomplishments. In addition, it’s all about:

  • exploring shared interests and mutual opportunities related to government, urban development, education, arts, and business.
  • establishing many new and valuable relationships between community, educational, and business leaders in Kortrijk/West Flanders and Greenville/The Upstate, that are excited about helping to maintain and develop this sister city relationship, while providing new opportunities for them-selves and the organizations or companies they represent.
  • developing the Kortrijk-Greenville bridge as a unique gateway between our both countries.

Here is the detailed agenda.

For the epicureans, enjoy a “Belgian Beer Dinner” on Wednesday May 10th at 7 pm at The Trappe Door, downtown Greenville.  This “fusion” menu is a mix of Belgian with Southern specialities.  The cost per person is $70 all-in (without alcohol: $50 per head), including meeting those Belgian Delegation participants:

Belgian Beer Dinner | 3/27/2017

As part of the Upstate International festivities, Greenville Sister Cities International would like to invite you to our 4th annual Belgian Beer Dinner!  This wonderful evening full of great conversation, laughs, and culinary delight will take place on Monday March 27th at The Trappe Door, downtown Greenville, SC.

Seating is limited, so please contact The Trappe Door ( or 864.451.7490) to reserve your seats – especially if you plan on coming with a larger group.

Last year, the event was sold out in less than 1 week, so it’s very important to get your name on the reservations list as soon as possible. In order to confirm and keep your reservation, you will be required for advance payment at The Trappe Door within 1 week of signing up.

Full refunds will be available upon cancellation at least 1 week before the event, i.e. by Sunday March 19th the latest. The money for later cancellations and no-shows will serve as a fundraiser for Greenville Sister Cities International.


Annual Belgian Potluck – 1/28/2017

No doubt that this tradition is a huge success.  Join us for our 3rd edition on January 28th, 2017.   Our kind hosts Gitte & Rik will open their doors to their lovely home in Marietta at 6 pm.

Put your dearself in your culinary gear and prepare some tasty homemade dish(es) – preferably with a Belgian taste – to share.  We always have peers stressing about cooking so, don’t use it as an excuse: there are other ‘jobs’ available for you… We will have a sign-up sheet and each participating family must bring something to the table!

This year’s potluck will be a kids-free evening, with just adults.  For obvious safety reasons.

Don’t wait to RSVP since attendance is limited and don’t forget every single family must sign up to bring some Belgian homemade [we insist on that] culinary elements to the table!

  • all those who are gluten intolerant, food allergenic, vegans or have any kind dietary challenge(s) are requested to bring their own food to avoid any mishaps.

Hot from the press … a real 6-course Belgian Beer Dinner organized by Greenville Sister Cities International as part of the Upstate International Month will take place on Monday March 21st, 2016 at the Belgian tavern The Trappe Door [South Carolina].   Up to you to pick the Goût de France dinner [see recent article] close to home or hit a 150-mile drive [via I-85 N] for true Belgian delight!  Of course, you can do both!

Upstate International Month highlights the beauty of Greenville’s diverse community through musical and artistic performances, discussions, book talks, culinary experiences and much more during the month of March.  Take a look at their events calendar.  Greenville is ‘sister’ with the Belgian medieval city of Kortrijk since 1991, and their interactions include student exchange programs through Furman University and exchanges between local garden clubs.

The Trappe Door, is a Belgian tavern with an old-world vibe offering in its regular lunch menu [to name a few] Cheese Croquettes, Coq Au Vin, Carbonades Flamandes and as dessert Belgian Waffles and White Chocolate Profiteroles.  And I will take note of that restaurant for future travel plans!

what is the closest to belgian cuisine?

I know … this blog is all about Belgian related stuff … but what if we do not have any Belgian restaurants in Atlanta?   Surely our epicureans will appreciate a French culinary event instead.  So here you go, even if I get stomach cramps just writing this!

Goût de France/Good France celebrates French gastronomy in various locations worldwide on 21 March 2016. Over 1500 chefs on all five continents are expected to join the event on the day of Spring. Dinners served simultaneously in participating restaurants will honour the merits of French cuisine, its capacity for innovation, and its values: sharing, enjoying, and respecting the principles of high-quality, environmentally responsible cuisine.

The Atlanta-based Southern Art*** [chef Didier Lailheugue – Executive chef at Intercontinental Buckhead Atlanta] and Table 3 Restaurant & Market in Nashville, TN [chef Charles Robb, Jr.] are participants of Goût de France/Good France.   While our local friend has set his a sophisticated and well-though menu at $58/person [wine not included], you will need to make the trip to Nashville for a cheaper dinner [$38/person] with vichyssoise, moules marinière and crème brûlée.

Our very first event of 2015 looks really promising, since I don’t know any Belgian who doesn’t like to gather around a table with a pintje in his/her hand … So get ready to dig into grand-mama’s cookbook for the one good old family recipe, that will make us all salivate!  There is no better place than our Belgian – homemade (I do insist on that) – Potluck to show off your culinary talents!  However, if the mere thought of mixing ingredients together to produce something edible, stresses you out; then there are other ‘jobs’ available for you… No excuse! Please consult the sign-up sheet.  We want to see all of you!

A dish from home, a meal dedicated to your palate … moules-frites or mosselen-friet (choice of 4 styles) by our Belgian Chef Philippe Haddad! beATL has reserved 40 couverts for its Beetles (y’ll) on Saturday, November 22nd.  Aperiti(e)f  will put us in the mood from 6.30 pm and dinner will be served from 7.30 pm.  For the non-musseleers among us, F&B has a few options like its famous steak tartaar/filet américain or braised rabbit Belgian style, Scottish salmon and filet mignon … And if that doesn’t make you salivate, Philippe will find a solution!

First Belgian Café by beATL

Reinstating the monthly tradition, our first Belgian Café, under beATL’s umbrella, will be held at a very special place.  A place that I just discovered even if its Chef has been around Atlanta for quite a long while.  So those who have been here ‘forever’ will know who I am talking about: Philippe Haddad.  Philippe, from Belgian origins, jump started his culinary career by attending the renown Hotelschool Ter Duinen in Koksijde.  He is now orchestrating the kitchen at F&B, which stands for “Food and Beverage”, a two-year old rustic neighborhood bistro offering French Belgian-inspired cuisine, hand-selected wines and craft cocktails.  On Thursday August 7th, beATL will have a dedicated area where will be able to gang around.   A RSVP would be so much appreciated so we can give them a headcount.

To conclude, here are some thoughts for your palate:  the mussels of course (4 versions), the authentic Belgian fries (with béarnaise or mayo), the braised rabbit (a recipe of Granny Haddad), steak frites and the fabulous filet américain (steak tartare)… In season add also the white asparagus to those highlights!   And fyi, the dessert’s first choice: Belgian waffles …

Belgian Artisanal Spirits Dinner

Nikolai’s Roof will host a four-course dinner paired with cocktails based on liqueurs from our famous Belgian Distillerie de Biercée on Thursday July 17th at 7 PM.  Dinner guests will enjoy learning more about these small-batch spirits, which have just recently become available in Georgia!  The cost is $65 per person, excluding tax and gratuity.  Seating for this special evening is limited and reservations should be made by calling (404) 221-6362.

The Distillerie de Biercée, hidden behind its 16th century walls, is located in Ragnies (Thuin, Belgium) and has been distilling since 1946.  Its  top quality eaux-de-vie and liqueurs are produced seasonally based on the fruits available.  They are made exclusively from unsprayed fresh fruit and are guaranteed free from artificial flavourings, preservatives and colorants.  Their top sellers are: Eau de VilléeNoir dʼIvoire and Poire Williams N°1,
